Indie vs Label
This is such an interesting time in music. There is a lot of power given to the artists again and music is flowing at unprecedented amount.
I am always asked which direction is best.
Being independent or sign to a label. There are arguments in both departments. The most common thing I hear from artists is "The Hell with Labels". But, before you throw all labels into the same pot or paint them with the same brush, you should check out which label best suits your needs as a band/artist. Depending on the label, they can offer different options for your band.
There's two sides to every argument and a lot of bands/artists that had bad experiences with labels will never admit that they signed a bad deal or didn't request certain stipulations in their contract when they signed (ie. get to retain the masters or have certain performance stipulations that have to be achieved otherwise the contract is null and void).
Yes its true that some artists did the best they could and still got screwed however there are also artists that swear by their label and all that the label did for them.
Whats your thought?

Music Today...
If you take a look at it, there has never been a better time in history to be an artist/band. No longer are you relying on a label to make or break you. You can control your own destiny. With the advent of social media and drive, you can make or break yourself. You can publish your own music, sell your own music and promote and set up your own shows. It reminds me of the oldschool days of Punk Rock. You didnt care about labels or ever being signed. Ya just went out and did it!
Well, today is no different. I encourage every band/artist to just go out, kill it, and own it!
